Fantastic Futon
Woodworking Plan

One minute it is a relaxing sofa. The next, it's a comfortable bed. Either way, our sturdy oak frame supports its fluffy mattress in the greatest of style. Build one for an extra bedroom, the family room, or that college-bound scholar. You'll find that the futon gets lots of use, and that you'll be the genius who made it.

We built our frame around a 54x75" full-size futon mattress. If you select a different size mattress, you'll need adjust the frame size accordingly.

The futon in the upright position shown measures:
35" deep by 77" long, and stands 32" tall.

Double-Duty Futon Coffee Table

Futon Chair/Ottoman

If you’ve built our futon sofa, consider these matching pieces–a futon recliner and ottoman. Both used standard futon cushions.

Chair measures 28" by 54" and uses a 6x22x28" futon. The ottoman measures 22-1/2" deep by 30" wide and stands 12" tall.

Morris Chair Plan

This adjustable-back Morris chair was inspired by Stickley furniture, and is built with pinned through-tenon joinery. The legs are veneered to get a quartersawn look. A hollow-chisel mortiser is used to cut the mortises in the legs and spindle mortises in the rails. Alternative methods for cutting the tenons are offered, as are tips on assembling the parts and adding a traditional ammonia-fumed finish.

Sleeping Beauty Futon

This sofa/sleeper is a great addition to the den, family room, or home office that gets pressed into service as a guest room. A television stand and a knockdown modular shelving unit round out the set, sharing the same crisp lines and simple construction.

Knockdown Cabinet System

Designed to match the futon sofa (DP-00176) and the TV stand (DP-00259), this sleek, versatile cabinet system lends itself to any number of furniture pieces that easily assemble and disassemble. We’ll show you how to build the components, you decide what your needs are, and build to suit. The key to the system lies in the cam-lock knockdown hardware that lets you alter your furniture as your needs change or grow. If you don’t foresee the need for the knockdown feature, you can join the parts by conventional methods, such as screws or biscuits.

Louisiana Style Side Table

This Louisiana-style table features cabriole legs and scalloped aprons while the lack of carvings, inlays, or other complex details lends a rustic feel. The table legs are joined to the aprons with pegged mortise-and-tenons and while the cabriole legs and scalloped edges may look exotic, they are not difficult to make.

Hall Table with Seamless Drawer
Woodworking Plans

Hall Table with Seamless Drawer – a graceful design inspired by nature. Woodworker Jennifer Anderson designed the legs on this table with a pronounced taper that is wider at the top to echo the shape of the calla lilies that grow wild on the California coast. The cut-away top was designed to put the legs on full display, and aprons were shaped with an arc to reinforce the theme. Even the frame-and-panel that supports the drawer from underneath was integrated into the decorative design.

Shaker Candlestand

Tilt-Top Tea Table

his Federal tilt-top table is the perfect project for intermediate-level wood-workers. It's neat and compact with few parts, and construction uses hand- and machine-tool techniques. The table's center column is turned on a lathe; the legs attach to the column with sliding dovetails. The slots for the sliding dovetails are cut with a router. The tapered legs are cut on the bandsaw and shaped with a spokeshave and card scraper.

Cricket Table
Fine Woodworking Project Plan

This drop-leaf table is based on an early English piece, but Chris Gochnour has given his design a distinctly American Arts and Crafts look. When the leaves are raised, the top is round. When they are lowered, the table has a space-saving, triangular top. The top pivots on a short bolt at the center of the table. To lower the leaves, just rotate the top until the leaves are parallel to the aprons. Once parallel, the leaves clear the legs and are free to drop down. To raise the leaves, lift them horizontal, and then rotate the top until the leaves are over the legs.

Two Classic Shaker Tables

Both Shaker tables are similar, except that legs are tapered or turned. Construction includes standard mortise-and-tenon joinery, dovetailed top rial, and dovetailed drawer. The square legs require a tapering jig; the more challenging turned legs, a lathe.

Everyday Cabinet

This small cabinet can be built quickly using a minimum of materials. The sides and back are frame-and-panel construction, with frame stiles biscuited to the legs. The rest of the joinery, other than the drawers, is mortised and tenoned. Among the fancy elements are slightly flared feet, which are easy to replicate using a template, and knife-hinge hardware. Federal Card Table

Krenov Inspired Display Cabinet

The cabinet-on-stand form popularized by James Krenov uses familiar construction methods such as mortise-and-tenon joints, dowels, and bridle joints. What makes it special are all the lessons and details Jim Budlong adds, learned in years teaching side-by-side with the master. For example, he starts with the doors and then builds the case to fit them. The doors are joined with attractive, simple bridle joints, and divided glass panels help make them special. The carcase is joined with dowels, which makes it easy to dry-fit to ensure a perfect fit with the doors. The legs are shaped on the bandsaw and refined with hand tools.
