Our twist on this classic project includes a drawer at the bottom to keep hanging files close at hand. Even full loaded, it rolls in and out easily on heavy-duty slides. The drawer box joiner requires just a single setup on the tablesaw explained within this plan. As an option, we’ll show you how to install a mortised lock in the bottom drawer.

Frame-and-Panel Bookcase

This attractive and functional bookcase was designed to have few parts and to be easy to move; it has frame-and-panel construction that integrates the four legs. There are tips on how to cut cove molding with a router bit and a dado set on the tablesaw. Even when filled with books, this piece of furniture appears light and graceful.

Arts and Crafts Bookrack
Fine Woodworking Project Plan

Gregory Paolini modeled this book rack after the Gustav Stickley's No. 74 book rack -- with its short design, V-shaped shelves, and D-shaped handholds. But Paolini also made the design his own, replacing wedged tenons with simple through-tenons, adding a shelf, and tapering the end panels for a look reminiscent of the Roycroft designs he loves. Paolini uses a router template to lay out and cut the slots for the shelf mortises and the other cutouts on the end panels. His router technique uses a guide bushing for initial cuts, followed by cleanup with a flush-trimming bit. The tenons are cut on the tablesaw, and the piece is finished with stain and shellac.
