Pencil-Post Bed
Fine Woodworking Project Plan

Popular for centuries, the pencil-post bed can be adapted from contemporary to traditional designs. This version features posts with simple octagonal feet and the classic tapered octagon on top. Hand-carved lamb's tongues, a tester frame, and figured wood help lend a period look. Instructions guide you through each step, from milling and tapering the posts to cutting the tapered chamfers, carving the lamb's tongues, and constructing the frame.

Arts and Crafts Bed
Fine Woodworking Project Plan

Building a bed requires working in a large scale, but this project breaks the job into several parts, making planning and assembly more manageable. Build from the outside in: posts and long rails first, then vertical pieces, and then center rails. This approach allows you to dry-fit the piece to get true dimensions for the internal members. Also included are directions for building a router jig to cut the floating-tenon joinery.

Fantastic Futon

One minute it is a relaxing sofa. The next, it's a comfortable bed. Either way, our sturdy oak frame supports its fluffy mattress in the greatest of style. Build one for an extra bedroom, the family room, or that college-bound scholar. You'll find that the futon gets lots of use, and that you'll be the genius who made it.

We built our frame around a 54x75" full-size futon mattress. If you select a different size mattress, you'll need adjust the frame size accordingly.

Chest of Drawers
Fine Woodworking Project Plan

Build a classic chest of drawers with a variety of dovetail joinery and Shaker-inspired elements. Included are methods for cutting dovetails with a combination of hand and power tools, cutting sliding dovetail slots accurately, and attaching molding with dovetailed keys, a method that allows the chest to shrink and expand with changes in humidity. Careful grain-matching and graduated drawers distinguish the piece.

Shaker Chest of Drawers
Fine Woodworking Project Plan

This low chest is a twist on the traditional Shaker blanket chest. While its size and appearance are similar to that of a blanket chest and it can fit at the foot of the bed, the drawers make it a more convenient storage place for smaller items like sweaters and clothes. As with much of Becksvoort's work, this design is heavily influenced by the Shaker design ethic, with its simple lines, functional design, solid construction, and cherry wood. Half-blind dovetails secure the sides to a subtop, and a sliding dovetail secures the bottom to the sides. A vertical divider gets centered in the top and bottom and dadoed in place. Front and back rails are notched around the vertical divider and dovetailed into place. A sturdy frame-and-panel back ensures that the piece looks beautiful from all directions.

Knockdown Cabinet System

Designed to match the futon sofa (DP-00176) and the TV stand (DP-00259), this sleek, versatile cabinet system lends itself to any number of furniture pieces that easily assemble and disassemble. We’ll show you how to build the components, you decide what your needs are, and build to suit. The key to the system lies in the cam-lock knockdown hardware that lets you alter your furniture as your needs change or grow. If you don’t foresee the need for the knockdown feature, you can join the parts by conventional methods, such as screws or biscuits.

Chippendale Mirror
Fine Woodworking Project Plan

This Chippendale mirror uses a wide range of woodworking skills, from basic design and layout to veneering and scrollwork. The piece has a visible mitered frame that sits on top of a poplar subframe. You'll learn how to surround the frame with decorative veneered attachments, and use a scrollsaw to shape the ornamental crests and ears. The piece can be finished with a non-grain-raising burnt umber dye, followed by garnet shellac.
