A comprehensive, completely up-to-date
guide to one of the most versatile tools in a woodshop
The bandsaw
is found in three out of four professional wood
shops. In fact, it’s the most widely used
woodworking tool of all. Although deceptively simple
-- a steel blade rotating around two rubber-clad
wheels -- the bandsaw does its best work when it’s
properly tuned.
Enter Lonnie Bird: In The Bandsaw Book, Bird
gives you all the information you may have wished
came with the owner’s manual plus a lot more,
like what to look for when buying a bandsaw and
how to tune it up for optimal performance.
Organized for easy access, the book provides in-depth,
practical information on setup, tuning, choosing
blades, and operation. Also covered are all bandsaw
techniques from basic to advanced. More than 225
color photos and illustrations. |

Get great bowl-turning results the first time around.
Turning a bowl is the
most popular project in the turning seminars
that I run. My five-day workshops start with
spindle turning; and after two days of spindle
exercises, there is a buoyant mood when students
chuck up bowl blanks and take bowl gouges
in hand. It is much like watching traditional
Olympic ice-skating. After the compulsory
figures program, the free skating is a joy.
People get excited and really start having
fun. There is something magical about turning
a bowl, because it is both creative and useful.
In this age of mass-produced, plastic look-alike
house wares, the knowledge that you have
produced something real, artistic, and unique
is a splendid touchstone. |

Expert advice from start to finish
Building an entire kitchen's worth of cabinets is a large-scale
woodworking project. When you imagine a 30-ft. expanse
of continuous cabinetry, it's no wonder many woodworkers
develop a mental block about building kitchen cabinets.
And it's easy to justify this resistance by arguing
that major cabinet manufacturers now offer a seemingly
endless variety of choices when it comes to cabinetry
styles, wood species, finishes, and special accessories.

After building a fine piece of

approachable style, readers will learn everything
they need to know to successfully finish a project:
how to determine the best finish, to properly
prepare wood with sanding techniques, to fix
minor wood defects, to apply decorative techniques
such as glazing and color laying, to properly

The legacy of extraordinary boxes
Treasure Chests traces the fascinating evolution
of the boxes that have held the things that people
valued most over the centuries. For thousands of
years, chests have gone to war, to sea, journeyed
with us across entire continents, and held and protected
the possessions we hold most dear in our very own
homes. From tool chests to toy chests, this book
celebrates how extraordinary a box canbe when it
is meant to hold something we treasure.
Whatever their contents, the chests in this book
are themselves treasures. Some are amazing for where
they have been or who used them. They are veterans
of battlefields or the Ringling Brothers’ circus.
Others ingeniously execute the purpose for which
they were made -- tightly fitted tool chests and
sea chests that shed water. Many are finely designed,
elegantly crafted, or made of rare and costly materials.
Beautifully photographed, each of the more than 100
extraordinary chests included in this book has an
amazing story to tell.

Complete instructions for making toys with interchangeable
parts
Fine craftsmanship is child's play in the hands of
lifelong woodworker Jim Makowicki. In this, his second
book, the author lends his design and woodworking skills
to a different kind of toy -- one that is sure to delight
children of all ages -- the toy that transforms.
You'll find plans for six inventive toy systems with
interchangeable components, including boats, ships,
trucks, and houses. There's no end to the possibilities
for assembly and imagination with these clever systems.
The toys all call for select hardwoods and top-grade
finishing materials which enhance the wood's beauty
and provide a safe surface for children's hands. And
with 218 illustrations and almost 200 photos, the projects
are clearly explained. There is no book like this one
anywhere. |

Expert advice on constructing case pieces
Rare is the woodworker who has never built a cabinet.
Sure, there are those who specialize in chairs, or
carving, or turning, but at some point most of us who
work wood have made a cabinet. Cabinets are among the
most useful of pieces. They hold all manner of stuff:
books, clothes, dishes, food, and more. Without cabinets,
our homes would be in disarray, a massive jumble of
our personal possessions. |

Aim Ontario Fraser, a former Fine Woodworking editor, employs a friendly tone that will inspire you and give you confidence -- especially if you have little or no experience using tools. Each project teaches specific skills, which can be applied later on, and results in a piece of furniture that you will be proud to have made.
Among the projects you will learn to build are a rustic coffee table, two-shelf bookcases, and a funky outdoor easy chair. Throughout the book, Fraser explains in detail the key operations or techniques that are needed to build the project. Helpful photos and drawings guide you along the way.

Robert Chapman has written a wonderful book called "WOODTURNING: A Fresh Approach". He bypasses all the business of learning to use the lathe and turn spindles. He writes with the assumption that anyone who buys the book has learned to use a lathe with some small degree of expertise. He takes you from simple little bowls to lidded containers to natural edge and "turning air." The pictures are plentiful and beautifully done. This book is a work of art as well as an interesting text book for the turning devotee.
I was especially impressed that Robert takes us not only step by step through the turning process for each type of bowl, he also takes us step by step through the process of harvesting the wood for those bowls. He talks about the drying process, how to cut and seal, how to plan which bowls to turn from which pieces of wood; but best of all, he drops a little known secret about producing "SPALTED" wood. I just laughed when I saw what he did. Spalted wood is so beautiful when turned, and we pay a huge price for spalted pieces. No longer will we pay through the nose for our spalting. A plastic bag, some planning, and a cup of plant food will give you exactly what you want. "Do it yourself spalting" What a concept!!

Woodworkers' Essential Facts Formulas & Short-Cuts
How high is a dining table or a coffee table? How do you draw the ellipse for a butler's tray? What is the Golden Mean and how can a woodworker use it? How to evenly space the balusters in a railing? How do you saw perfect miter and bevel angles? How much load can a shelf carry before it sags or breaks?
Every day, every woodworker has to scratch his head over questions like these. Every workshop operation requires knowing some kind of measurement, formula, fact, or calculation.
Workshop problems usually can be solved with mathematics, but as this interesting book shows, there's often a no-math solution too. In most situations, the savvy craftsman can get the answers either with math or by applying common-sense rules of thumb. This handbook presents both approaches so readers can choose what works best in their particular situation. With this handbook on the bench, readers will enjoy success in the workshop whether or not they are comfortable with mathematics.
Hundreds of illustrations guide readers through the solutions to everyday workshop problems. Straightforward writing and a simplified approach to calculations lead readers step-by-step to the answers they need. Dozens of useful tables put essential reference information into this single, easy-to-follow resource. This practical handbook, packed full of facts, formulas and shortcuts, is essential for woodworkers of all skill levels. |
